Play or Sit?

November 21st, 2012 · No Comments · Coaching Topic of the Month

Life is a wonderful game to be played and not watched from the sidelines. That means we have to be willing to take chances and get in the game or we’ll never know what it feels like to score a goal, sink a three-pointer, or make a touchdown.

OK, enough with the bad sports analogy. Think about it though, as coaches in order to challenge our clients to play a bigger game, we have to be willing to challenge ourselves. So, when was the last time you took a chance? When was the last time you threw caution to the wind and just went for something?

If your answer is, “I have no clue.” OR”Gosh, I don’t remember.” Don’t you think it is time you got off the bench and stepped into a bigger game?

A Child-Like Perspective

October 29th, 2012 · No Comments · Coaching Topic of the Month

Have you ever watched a child pick up something and investigate it as if it were the coolest thing they have ever seen? They often explore what we might consider the most simple things with a wide-eyed curiosity and enthusiasm. It is a beautiful thing to see; to see a child so present in the moment, learning, and enthralled by the things surrounding them.

Isn’t it true that as adults we sometimes get so lost in all the day-to-day that we sometimes don’t see what’s around us? We forget to be present in the moment, clouding our ability to see the great learning experiences and fantastic opportunities. Heck, we even forget to breathe!

How does the color blue suit you?

Silence Truly is Golden

September 30th, 2012 · No Comments · Coaching Topic of the Month

Silence is a beautiful thing. Silence provides us with a break from all the buzz. It affords us some breathing space. It can be a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day. As coaches, it can be one of the most powerful coaching tools in our coaching toolbox.

You may have already noticed or experienced this, but when there’s silence there’s a natural urge to fill it. In the coaching conversation, when you use silence you give the other person the time and the space to reflect before responding. Think about it, you have asked that jewel of a question, a real eye-opener, what better way to highlight that question then to go silent?

Strategize ; “The smart way of getting somewhere with the least amount of effort or cost.”

August 31st, 2012 · No Comments · Coaching Topic of the Month

By Alison Hendren, MCC, CEO

Developing efficient, supportive and enjoyable strategies to help people achieve their goals is what is key to providing value in coaching. Most people really want and need a strategy to make what they are wanting to accomplish/achieve/solve/create happen. Just recently I was speaking with a client who discovered a critical lapse in communication by her team. They implemented a fundamental change but forgot to communicate it to the key stakeholders! The change was a good one but they just forgot to tell people before they made it…sound familiar?

Action Planning: A key to getting things done!

July 8th, 2012 · No Comments · Coaching Topic of the Month

We all do it. Some may call it action planning, others may call it strategizing. Regardless, it is something we do on a daily basis to accomplish our tasks and goals or to get from Point A to Point B.

Think about it.

If you like to write out your grocery list in the order that the items appear in the store, you are action planning in order to ensure that you get everything you need. OR

If you schedule your day from appointments to downtime, you too are action planning in order to make the most of your day.

Requesting – The opportunity to ask the World of your Coachee!

June 27th, 2012 · No Comments · Coaching Topic of the Month

by Alison Hendren, CEO, MCC

Many people who learn coaching skills are under the false impression that they should never ask anything of the coachee but simply let them come up with what they are willing to commit to….WRONG!! Requesting is one of the 5 Core Coaching Skills in our 5/5/5 Coaching Skills Training Program™ because there are many times when making a request can catapult the coachee to a whole different level or at the very least accelerate movement thru a particular challenge or issue.

“Trust Me!”

May 27th, 2012 · No Comments · Coaching Topic of the Month

“Self-trust is the first secret of success”. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to trust ourselves. Trust that we will make the right decision. Trust that under pressure we will do the right thing. Trust that when placed in a difficult situation that we will be able to cope. Trust that we will say the right thing at the right time. Trust that our coaching skills are good enough or that we are good coaches.

Key to building self trust is listening to our gut instincts; that little twinge deep inside that indicates the best direction or the thing to say in that moment. In coaching, when we ask the question that our gut is telling us to ask, 9 times out of 10 it is exactly what the coachee needs to be asked.

“You Rock! No, Really!”

April 27th, 2012 · No Comments · Coaching Topic of the Month

“You can do it! I believe in you!”

“Hey Jim, job well done on that project!”

“Wow! What an awesome insight!”

Aaahhh, words of encouragement. One of the many highlights of being a coach is genuinely encouraging our teams and individual coachees. In doing so, we get to be their cheerleaders or champions for their cause (minus the pom-poms and short, shorts), witness their faces light up, or hear the lift in their voices when told that what they are doing or who they are is really awesome!! What could be better? Seriously.

Sincere encouragement (not platitudes for the sake of platitudes) serves a multitude of purposes…

The Powerful Question

March 27th, 2012 · No Comments · Coaching Topic of the Month

As coaches one of our wonderful responsibilities is to ask powerful questions, those open-ended, exploratory type questions that support our clients…
  • in gaining insight,
  • to dig deeper,
  • to create new perspectives, and
  • explore a multitude of potentials.

This month’s issue of our newsletter is dedicated to the powerful question and in honor of it, we would like to share a few from Coaching Out of the Box® book 365 COACHING QUESTIONS™

ACTION
What will get you moving on this project?

BALANCE
What tools do you use to “recharge” yourself?

CHANGE
What if nothing changed?

CHOICES/DECISIONS
What’s the best choice for you right now?

SAYING “NO”
How good are you at saying “NO” to others?

The Art of Listening; a Powerful Coaching Tool

February 27th, 2012 · No Comments · Coaching Topic of the Month

Just for a moment think of a conversation where you felt you were truly being listened to. Remember how it felt, the impact it had on you and on the conversation. Did you feel safe to share? Did you feel valued? Did you feel inspired to take action?

One of the greatest gifts we can give others, especially our coachees, is the time and the space to be listened to, really listened to. Listening to another, not just hearing the words, but really engaging with what and how the person is sharing…

…helps to develop trust and intimacy between you and the other person

…allows you to ask evocative questions

…creates the opportunity for exploration and awareness

…increases motivation and productivity.
